Why I treat patients the way I do?
My first chiropractor helped me with many things, though at the time I thought that was how all chiropractors were trained. He helped me with back pain after a fall down stairs. He also told me what to eat for my hypoglycemic attacks, after confirmation from my medical doctor (the 4 hour glucose tolerance test and other testing) that I was actually hypoglycemic. When I had acne and the dermatologist told me foods have absolutely nothing to do with acne, she said, just take these antibiotics and cortisone crème. My acne did get better, but it really cleared up after visiting my chiropractic physician who informed me what foods to eat, not to eat and which supplements to take. But that’s not why I became a chiropractor.
In high school I became allergic to milk. I would get painful gas, bloating, and diarrhea and I didn’t know why. I finally was able to connect it to milk, cheese and ice cream. I even thought maybe it was in my head until I had pains after being sure I didn’t eat any milk products. Then the next day, I checked the trash from the last nights’ dinner and the Rice-a-Roni product I ate contained Casein, a milk product, that can cause milk pains, and I was that sensitive. From then on I knew for sure I couldn’t handle milk products and it wasn’t in my head. How do you fake gas and diarrhea?
One day, I visited my chiropractor for an ache and I mentioned my cheese issue. He said he could fix that. I said, “I didn’t know you can fix pains caused by milk intolerance, why didn’t you tell me?” And he said, “Why didn’t you ask me!”
He used a technique called Total Body Modification (TBM) to help the body’s aberrant neurologic response to milk (milk and casein tested as an issue). Immediately after the adjustment/treatment, he gave me a piece of cheese to eat and I didn’t have any milk/cheese pains. I thought this was the greatest thing ever. Who cares how it worked, who cares if it was in my head, who cares. How do you fake diarrhea? I was better.
The milk pains didn’t come back until 17 years later. Marriage can be stressful and at that time I couldn’t tolerate virtually any kind of food including cheese. I was able to successfully resolve this issue again. Please ask me in person for the details of what I have experienced since with food intolerances.
Because of my remarkable adjustment I decided to become a chiropractor. I studied the same techniques as my first chiropractor, including TBM and Applied Kinesiology, but also the basics things, like actually adjusting the spine, adjusting extremities and cranial adjusting. In fact, I continued my studies with over 10,000 hours of post graduate seminar training. I even became a Chinese medicine Doctor and teach seminars on Clinical Kinesiology and Internal Disorders.
So why do I treat patients the way I do?
I didn’t get where I am today in one step, it was a process and a chain of linked events.
Why would a person go to a chiropractor? I first went for spinal pain, where I learned about the spine and the subluxation. If I didn’t experience the benefit of the adjustment for spinal function then I may have never gotten the chance to know and experience the other benefits, like improved organ function, dietary recommendations, etc.
In my office today I still treat and correct first the subluxation, yes there are herbs for kidney stones, herbs and adjustments for a cold/flu, adjustments for menstrual cramps…
My specialty is digestion/gluten sensitivity and female hormone balance, but I still give patients adjustments and remove subluxations, including extremity subluxations.
What I found was that when a patient had a muscle problem and I performed a muscle/myofascial manual therapy they responded, when they had a joint subluxation and I adjusted them they responded, when they had a nutritional deficiency and they added the proper nutrition/herb they responded, when they removed the allergic food from their diet they improved, when they removed their toxic chemical they responded, and when they addressed the emotional unresolved issue they responded.
Each time I added an additional therapeutic modality I was able to help more people with different conditions. Some patients needed more nutrition, some acupuncture and still others more homeopathic remedies to resolve their condition. The treatment was different for each patient with most patients needing a variety of therapies to create a resolve.
The 5th Century Physician, Sun Simiao (孫思邈) stated, “Superior treatment consists of dealing with an illness before it appears, mediocre treatment consists of curing an illness on the point of revealing itself, inferior treatment consists of curing the illness once it has manifested itself.
Education and training
Dr. D’Aversa is trained as a chiropractor and a Chinese medicine doctor. He graduated from Parker College of Chiropractic in Dallas, TX. As a student in chiropractic college, he began teaching other students adjusting, he became the technique tutor, teaching the nine different adjusting techniques taught at Parker. While in school, he also began his acupuncture/meridian training and received his certificate shortly after graduation. He continued his postgraduate studies with courses such as Certified Chiropractic Extremity Practitioner (C.C.E.P.), Myofascial therapy, Neuro-emotional Technique (NET), Applied Kinesiology (AK), Clinical Kinesiology (CK), Sacral Occipital Technique (SOT), Cranial therapy, Nutrition, and Rehabilitation. He eventually amassed over 10,000 hours of postgraduate training. Dr. D’Aversa then traveled to China and studied at Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine in Harbin, China.
He began educating while in school but continued with small study groups soon after graduation. This passion eventually led him to give seminars for other doctors. Dr. D’Aversa was also a guest speaker at Logan College of Chiropractic and Parker College of Chiropractic. To see the schedule for the next patient education lecture click here.

Our Philosophy
This unique education has allowed Dr. D’Aversa to integrate the western medical diagnosis with the Chinese medicine pattern diagnosis, allowing for a clearer understanding of disease and health.
It is my hope that each patient has access to a thorough and proper medically diagnostic evaluation and workup. Each patient is asked to bring in their previous medical history, reports, medication list, scans, imaging and blood chemistries when available. I also would like to share my findings and diagnostic imaging with your primary care physician or specialist.
Your health and healing need not be considered an alternative medicine approach, but rather an additional level of care above and after disease care. Modern surgeries, medicines and acute trauma care are phenomenal compared to the medicine of the 1940’s.
But, What do you want to do when you are not sick?
Each patient and each situation can be different. Health and healing involves a desire or self actualization to be healthy. This is not crisis, fight or flight survival care. Health can be achieved and maintained with a balance of proper education, a clear purpose, contemporary and traditional therapies, natural foods and environment.
